Pet for a Vet Dog Rescue Flight Helps Save Four Dogs

Pilot.dog

This flight is for, four dogs that were either abandoned or put up for free on Craigslist. Four innocent dogs that were left on their own because their owners didn’t want them anymore. Is so sad but it happens everyday here in the South. Luckily for these four they were taken in by a rescue and foster to care of them.

A big thanks goes out to all the wonderful donors who help us at Pilot.Dog. Because of the generous help Pilot.Dog was able to assist with fuel for Flying Mutts Rescue and help Forgotten Tails Animal Rescue with some assistance as well.

Kelly Arsenault with PRONE – Papillion Rescue of the North East contacted Mike Malaro and us regarding a project she is doing with PetSmart in NH called Pet for a Vet Project. They will be placing a small dog with a veteran or first responder in need of a companion. Ginny of Forgotten Tails Animal Rescue in South Carolina had found four small dogs to place in the project.

So we got together with Mike to see how soon we could fly the pups up to New Hampshire. The best time for everyone was Sunday, May 7th. Unfortunately Pam was not able to go on this flight so we reached out to our amazing volunteers and Dorothy and Mike were able to fly with Steve.

The first dogs that Ginny found were two Chihuahua sisters approximately 1-2 years old. Molly weighed 5 pounds and Polly weighed 5.5 pounds. These tiny little babies were left in a rabbit cage in the backyard of a house where their family left them when they moved. Neighbors fed and watered the dogs until a rescue could come and take them. They were in a being fostered until transportation could be arranged.

Then there was Bernie, a 2 year old Poodle that weighed 12.2 pounds. Bernie was found wandering with another big dog and brought to a high kill shelter in South Carolina. The family came and paid for the big dog but left Bernie to be euthanized. Poor Bernie was a matted mess when Ginny came in and rescued him. Bernie was being fostered by Ginny until he could be transported north.

Finally, there is Little Bit aka Lilly. Lilly is a 2 year old Jack Russell that weighs 11 pounds. Lilly was listed for free on Craigslist because her family was moving and didn’t want to take her with them. It’s so sad because this happens all of the time in the South.

Early Sunday morning Steve and Pam met Dorothy and Mike out at the airport to go over the plan for the the flight. Soon, Steve, Dorothy and Mike were on their way to Georgetown, SC to meet Ginny and the other Fosters who were bringing the dogs.

After taking off from Georgetown, SC and spending 2.5 hours in the air. The flight was bumpier the further north they flew. The dogs all did great during the flight. Bernie bonded with Mike up front and loved looking out the window.

Dorothy sat in the back and gave loads of love and cuddles to the three pups back there.

Steve, Mike, and Dorothy finally made it to Maryland where they met Mike and Kelly for the transfer.

The pups flew North while Steve, Dorothy, and Mike headed back home to Raleigh, North Carolina. They had to dodge storms and rain on the way home but they arrived, tired and happy that four great dogs were saved on this mission.
